How the conversion works

Pandoc's LaTeX writer turns the document tree into compilable source: Word headings become section and subsection commands, tables become tabular environments, footnotes become footnote commands, and emphasized text becomes an emph call.

Title, author and date read from the document properties are emitted as title, author and date commands, so adding a maketitle line in your preamble is enough for a title page.

The conversion runs in your browser — the LaTeX source is generated locally by the WebAssembly engine and never touches a server.

Common issues and how to fix them

Compile with xelatex or lualatex rather than pdflatex if your document contains non-Latin scripts or CJK text — pandoc's output is UTF-8 and expects a Unicode-capable engine.

Images are referenced with relative paths and includegraphics, so keep the extracted media/ folder next to the .tex file when compiling, or use the ZIP download which bundles both.

Very long tables are emitted as longtable so they break across pages. If a table overflows the column width, add a tabularx-based override or reduce font size in your template.

For citations, feed the same references.bib through the citation option in the Pro section so cite commands resolve into a bibliography.

Who uses this page

Researchers drafting manuscripts in Word who need an arXiv- or journal-ready LaTeX skeleton, students converting lecture notes into thesis chapters, and engineers generating LaTeX reports from Word-based tooling.

Convert to LaTeX FAQ

+Can I convert Word documents to LaTeX?

Yes. Drop a .docx, select LaTeX output. Headings become \section{}, tables become tabular, and footnotes become \footnote{}. The result compiles with pdflatex or xelatex.

+Does it handle math?

Perfectly. If your source has LaTeX math (e.g. an HTML file with MathJax), Pandoc preserves the math environments. Word's equation editor maps to LaTeX math mode.

+Can I use this for academic papers?

Yes. Pandoc's LaTeX writer produces clean, compilable LaTeX with proper document structure. Add your own preamble and bibliography for publication-ready output.
