How Markdown to PDF works

Markdown is light plain-text markup and PDF is a fixed-layout printing format, so the conversion passes through HTML. Pandoc turns your Markdown into clean HTML with real heading levels, tables and fenced code blocks.

That HTML is wrapped in a print stylesheet with A4 page size, sensible margins and page-break rules — headings stay with the paragraph that follows them, and tables and code blocks are kept off split pages.

Your browser's print dialog then produces the PDF: choose "Save as PDF" as the destination. Because the PDF is built from real text, it stays selectable, searchable and accessible — unlike screenshot-based converters.

Getting the best PDF output

Use headings in your Markdown (##, ###). They become real PDF outline entries in most readers, which makes long documents navigable and easy to skim.

Fenced code blocks are rendered in a monospaced box and kept on a single page, so code samples survive the trip. GFM pipe tables become bordered tables.

Set paper size and margins from the print dialog. Portrait A4 with standard margins suits most documents; switch to landscape when you have wide tables.

Markdown to PDF FAQ

+Is the PDF really text-selectable?

Yes. The PDF is produced by your browser's print engine from styled HTML, so the text stays selectable, searchable and copyable — it is not a screenshot.

+Where does the PDF file go?

Your browser opens its print dialog. Choose "Save as PDF" as the destination and pick a folder — the file is written there directly. Nothing is stored on a server.

+Can I control page size and margins?

Yes, from the print dialog — set Paper size (A4, Letter…) and Margins there. The converter already applies A4 defaults and page-break rules for headings, tables and code blocks.

+Is my Markdown uploaded?

Never. Pandoc runs in your browser via WebAssembly and the print step is local. The network panel stays empty throughout.

+Do images in my Markdown appear in the PDF?

Remote images (https URLs) are fetched by the browser and normally appear; relative local paths may be missing because there is no server. Absolute image URLs give the most reliable results.
