About Word→MD
Word→MD is a privacy-first document converter. It brings the full power of Pandoc — the open-source universal document converter used by academics, writers and developers — into the browser, with zero uploads and zero accounts.
It exists because converting documents should not require trusting a stranger's server with your files.
Why we built this
Most online converters work the same way: you upload your document to a server, a script converts it, and you download the result. Your files — which may contain unpublished research, business plans or personal notes — sit on someone else's machine.
We wanted the alternative: the exact same conversion quality with the files never leaving your hands.
How it works
Under the hood, the site runs Pandoc (the industry-standard converter) compiled to WebAssembly. On your first visit the engine (~58 MB) is downloaded once and cached; after that, every conversion runs locally in a Web Worker thread.
Because it is the real Pandoc — not a partial reimplementation — citations, footnotes, tables, math and metadata all behave exactly as they do on the command line. The site supports 14 input formats and can also resolve CSL citations, run Lua filters and apply custom templates, entirely in the browser.
Principles
Privacy first: your documents never leave your device — not as uploads, not as telemetry, not as logs.
Free and fast: the core converter is free, requires no account, and works offline once the engine is cached. The site itself is intentionally lightweight — mostly static pages, no heavyweight frameworks on the client.
The people behind it
Word→MD is built and maintained by a small team of independent developers who care about document tooling and web privacy.
